Portraits of Eton

Eddie & Saleh

Eddie Aram, Saleh Moamen-Siamy

This was one of the first photos that I took when I borrowed the camera. I was still trying to understand how to use the focus and to light a photograph, and ended up with quite a happy portrait, I think.

“Let me play a little something…”

Hari Balan-Nair

I was due to come over to figure out how Hari and I could submit our written work to the college that we were both applying to at Oxford, but instead I decided to bring a camera and be of no use.

“Why do you have a camera?”

Arthur Van den Bergh, Tom Alfrey

I found a group of three guys, all in the same room, all on their phones, being socially anti-social. But one of them was not distracted enough to not notice the guy who just walked in with a camera.

John Montgomery

Lorcan J.M. Birch

His desk really was that messy.

Evening Rehearsal

Will Robinson

I happened to have had my camera with me when I went to a choir rehearsal, and the light shining up from the lamps in the stalls provided an unexpected shot.

No Ragging, Boys!

Abel Jackson, Wilf Steward

Wilf and Abel are known to be in a constant state of mischief, and here, they were playing in the courtyard. I took this through a gap in the window of our house’s Library.

FIFA + spectators

Abel Jackson, Eddie Aram, Wilf Steward, Cato Pennings

Eddie and Cato were playing FIFA, with Wilf and Abel watching in the hopes that they might get a go. A minute after Eddie and Cato finished their game and left, our housemaster came in and berated me for allowing E-blockers into Library.

Weirded Out

Oscar Hope

If one walks into Oscar’s room, at any time during the day, they inevitably find him drinking instant coffee. I’m glad I captured him alongside his crappy guitar, no doubt a component of his identity.

Watching a War Documentary

Alex Richardson

I was with Will in the next room, and burst in without warning and immediately took a picture. Alex seems to live quite a leisurely life.

Losing at Online Chess

Eddie Aram

Eddie, though an impressive chess talent, was suffering a loss which agitated him, the reason for the brevity of this particular shoot.

“Yep?”

Eli Wilbur

Never disturb the house captain’s doomscrolling time.

Captain of the Oppidans

Floris Brocklebank

Photographing such an in-demand guy was difficult, because people kept walking in with their various needs and concerns, so I opted for a portrait in which he was in conversation.

A Visit from A-Block

Sebastian Hopton

Seb, a good friend from my house now on his gap year, had come back to Eton for St Andrews Day, and stopped by my room.

Junglist Massive

Henry Williams, Dominic Goodall

I think this one speaks for itself, no?

“Do we look tough?”

Olaniyi Loye, Alfie Hayes

I was walking up the stairs with a camera in my hand, and they asked me to take their photo. According to them, this is “proof that anything can be an album cover”.

Wills’ and Hills’ Spot

Hills Nwokedi, Wills Nwokedi

Hills and Wills, the closest pair of brothers I have ever met, were naturals at getting their photo taken. Hills told me to meet him and Wills after chapel outside Wills’ house, at a spot special to both of them, where they always chat.

Santa Fun Run I

Hugo Turpin, Lewis Day, Eli Wilbur, Sarah Hyman

Eli, Hugo, Toby Webster and I helped to organise a Christmas fun run for a local Alzheimer’s and Dementia charity, which had already been going for a few years. I took this photo as we set up and waited for runners.

Santa Fun Run II

Brandon Wong

He sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake…

Mr. Harrison, or JDH

John Harrison

Mr Harrison was my history of art teacher during my last two years at school. Everybody who has been taught by him seems to remember him for the rest of their lives; even some of my friend’s fathers have very fond memories of him from their time at Eton.
